Cathedral Windows Cushion

I've been feeling strangely drawn to trying my hand at a bit of cathedral windows patchwork for some time. And making a friend for Maria's hexie cushion seemed to be the perfect opportunity. I followed this tutorial on Moda Bake Shop, which was very clear.

Unfortunately it really didn't turn out as I had visualised! It's very, very red and yellow! Which might seem a stupid comment given that I picked the fabrics in the first place, but I just hadn't appreciated how little impact the other fabrics would have in the finished cushion. Have you ever made anything where the colours really didn't work as you had hoped?

Even apart from my serious disappointment with the colour scheme, it doesn't stand up to close, critical scrutiny. I stupidly cut my red, spotty squares too small and then even more stupidly thought I'd get away with it! But I did actually quite enjoy the making process, it was good to try something completely new and as a technique it wasn't as tricky as I had thought it might be.

I'm already planning another attempt with a very different colour palette!

Linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts, and wishing you all a happy weekend.

Sally.

  1. I think is super cute, very happy. The windows are so tiny, very impressed. I have such a hard time with smaller quilting.

  2. It might not be what you had envisioned, but it is bright and cheery. I like how the border are red and the cathedral windows peak into red and white polka dots. :)

  3. I am always impressed with cathedral windows - they look so hard to do! Beautiful pillow!

  4. I love it! The effect is like the small, stained glass window panes in really old churches. Cathedral windows look fiendishly difficult to do. I've just bought a kit to make a cushion this way and I'm a bit confused by the instructions. I'll have a look at the tutorial you used.

  5. Your pillow is beautiful and bright and happy, even if You can find your "mistakes"! I have had to learn about sizing certain key pieces when making the single Cathedral window pincushion, too. Your are inspiration to make a big pillow now. I love how we learn from the journey of making a new project!

  6. The cathedral window pillow is incredible. I actually like the colours. They're vibrant and happy. The hexie pillow has a well-loved vintage look that I adore.

  7. I have never heard of cathedral window patchwork. Looks pretty amazing to me! It is very red, but I think that's a good thing! X

  8. It's definitely very red and yellow but in a wonderfully cheery way :) a little southern Spain (it reminds me of the architecture) for a very grey and wet England!

  10. Beautiful, Sally, even if you're not keen on the colours. Maybe they'll grow on you over time. I've never done cathedral windows - looks complicated.

  11. It has turned out really well I think. It always seems such a difficult pattern when you just look at it, so good for you for doing it so well. It looks like a soft yellow and a soft red, so it works really nicely together. x
