Elephant Quilt

I've been desperately trying to squeeze bits and pieces of sewing time in over the last couple of weeks (usually between the hours of 11 at night and 1 in the morning!). This is largely because I have 2 quilts on the go at the moment, both of which have got to be finished by the end of next week. Aaagh!

I'll show you where I'm up to with one of them today. I was given a brief for this one - 'blue, white and orange, with an elephant theme'. And it's a sofa throw rather than a bed quilt. I've gone for wool with this, it feels like it's been ages since I made a wool quilt and it's lovely to be sewing with it again. It's also a colour combination I've gone for previously in wool here.

So far I've just got lots of squares/rectangles with elephants of some kind on there - appliqued, machine emboidered and one that's reverse appliqued. Here they are:

This is the reverse appliqued one - I don't think I've ever done any reverse applique before so it was interesting to try it.

I've been enjoying doing them, especially the machine embroidery, it's very therapeutic. If you've never tried it then have a go. If you're comfortable using a sewing machine then you'll be amazed how easily you can 'draw' with it if you go slowly. Get yourself a water soluble pen to draw in a basic outline first and then experiment. I mainly tend to do just several lines of a simple running stitch, and the beauty of it is that it doesn't have to be perfect, a little wiggle here or there just adds to the effect - or so it seems to me anyway. Here's a closer look at a couple of mine just so you can see the lines, wiggles and all:

I haven't got any specific kind of plan yet as to how I'm going to put them together, I'm going to wing it! The general idea is to do something slightly similar to the Tree Quilt, having said that it'll probably turn out completely different, especially as there are no particularly large elephant squares. But I think I've done all the elephants I'm going to do so I'll soon see if it works. Watch this space!

Back tomorrow, Sally.
