Patchwork Snail

I think we're going to have problems with snails this year in the garden. Already there seem to be loads of them around. And the trouble is I really struggle to 'dispose' of them in any way. I'm afraid I don't have a problem being mean to slugs, but I just can't squash a snail. The best I can do is relocate it to another part of the garden. I'm not sure whether it's because of the sad, scrunching noise you get when you tread on them, or because all the children either have loved or currently do love them (particularly Maria at the moment), or just because there's something quite beautiful about them.

Venetia went out with the camera earlier and came back with some photos of them.

Last year I put lots of crushed egg shells around some of our plants and that seemed to work reasonably well. But this year we have hopes that we might actually grow a few more veggies, and I'm not sure egg shells round everything is going to be too practical. And already those snails seem to know exactly where the seedling buffet table is at the party. Has anybody got any good snail deterrent ideas?

A rainbow, patchwork snail, however, is not a problem!

I think he'd look pretty good on another Ipad case, but this one I made as a brooch.

Back again tomorrow with a photo,

Sally.

  4. Hi Sal, Laura told me a good deterrent a couple of years ago and it real works. Copper tape, I put it round my raised bed. Its full of veggies. Some sort of electrical impulse???? repells them without hurting them.x

  6. I think it's because they're quite beautiful. Mind you, if you take off the shell they look a lot like slugs. I'm sorry I don't have any ideas on getting rid of snails. I know beer works for slugs. Maybe it's worth a try. Does anyone have ideas on how to attract rainbow, patchwork snails to a garden?
